DID YOU KNOW:
-
Between 2003 and 2007 thirteen workers were killed as a result of industrial incidents involving lift trucks.
-
Between 1996 and 2008 there were over 10,000 forklift related incidents where there was a lost time injury according to the Occupational Health and Safety Council of Ontario (OHSCO).
-
The Ministry of Labour compliance program that ran from April 1, 2004 to March 31, 2008 reduced the workplace injury rate by 20 per cent, or more than 50,000 incidents.
-
Because of the drop in the annual rate of lost-time injuries, employers have avoided about $5 billion in direct and indirect costs during the four years ending March 31, 2008. Reduced injuries also result in less strain on the health care system, and fewer workers off the job means increased productivity for Ontario's economy.
-
That, according to the Occupational Health and Safety Act, a corporation convicted under the Act can face a maximum fine of $500,000.
-
That, according to the "Act", individuals can face a fine of $25,000 or imprisonment for not longer than 12 months or both.
Many regulations made under Ontario's Occupational Health and Safety Act require compliance with standards published by the Canadian Standards Association (CSA). The standards define requirements for reducing the risk of workplace injuries.
Ontario--together with other Provinces and Territories of Canada--is working with CSA to make it easier for employers and workers to comply with Occupational Health and Safety requirements.
As an employer you need to be sure you are exercising your "due diligence". That you are doing everything reasonable to protect the health and safety of your workers in accordance with section 25(2)(a) of the "Act" which states that an employer is to "provide information, instruction and supervision to a worker to protect the health or safety of the worker." Make sure your lift truck operators have been deemed "competent" by a certified trainer and that they are properly certified and up to date.
"Forklifts and other lifting devices are a significant cause of serious worker injury and deaths....The Government of Ontario and its workplace partners are committed to eliminating all workplace injuries, including those related to these lifting devices. Workers have a right to come home each day to their families, safe and sound." (Peter Fonseca, Minister of Labour)
